Fibromyalgia is a disease characterized by generalized musculoskeletal pain accompanied by fatigue, sleep disturbances, mood and memory disturbances.
The main symptoms
The main symptoms are:- Generalized pain. The pain associated with fibromyalgia is often described as a constant dull ache that has lasted for at least three months. To be considered generalized, the pain must occur on both sides of the body, above and below the waist.
- Asthenia . People with fibromyalgia often wake up tired, even though they report sleeping for long periods of time. Sleep is often disturbed by pain, and many fibromyalgia patients have other sleep disorders, such as restless legs syndrome and sleep apnea.
- Cognitive difficulties . A symptom commonly known as " fibro-fog " impairs the ability to concentrate, pay attention, and focus on mental tasks.
Fibromyalgia and other conditions
Fibromyalgia often coexists with other conditions , such as:- irritable bowel syndrome,
- chronic fatigue syndrome,
- migraine and other types of headaches,
- interstitial cystitis or painful bladder syndrome,
- temporomandibular disorders,
- anxiety,
- depression,
- postural tachycardia syndrome.
