What causes hemiplegic migraine?

Aug 16, 2021

A genetic origin

According to the various researches , four genes could be at the origin of hemiplegic migraines :
  • CACNA1A
  • ATP1A2
--> Together, these two genes respond to most cases of familial hemiplegic migraine.
  • SCN1A
  • PRRT2

Serotonin involved?

A defect or mutation in one of these genes impacts the body in the production of a specific protein that plays a role in communication between nerve cells. One of these chemical messengers, or neurotransmitters, is serotonin . Serotonin is a neuromodulator, it is produced by neurons for their communication with each other, in our brain . The functions of serotonin are numerous and not all of them are known, but we know that it is involved in the regulation of behavior, mood, anxiety, learning or even motivation or decision-making. Hemiplegic migraine also has a genetic character . Indeed, if one of the two parents has hemiplegic migraine, he/she will have a 50% “chance” of transmitting the gene to their children, this is called familial hemiplegic migraine .
