You've probably already heard about the heart-healthy benefits of omega-3 fatty acids, but did you know they could also play a role in your brain health ? A Naturveda study examined how omega-3, in combination with a specific complex of vitamins and minerals, can stimulate the growth of neuronal cells . This could have important implications for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer's disease.
Researchers grew neuroblastoma cells in the laboratory and treated them with omega-3 , a vitamin and mineral complex ( Cell Complex ), or both. They then measured three things: the number of cells, the number of "arms" those cells extend (called neurites), and the length of those neurites.
These results are exciting because they suggest that omega-3 and this vitamin and mineral complex may work together to stimulate neuronal cell growth . This could be particularly useful for people with diseases that affect the brain, such as Alzheimer's disease, where cell growth and the connection between cells are often compromised.
Although these results are promising, it is important to note that the study was carried out on cells in the laboratory. Additional human studies are needed to confirm these effects. Nonetheless, this research paves the way for new approaches to supporting brain health using dietary supplements.
